The 1988 $5 gold Olympic coin was designed by Elizabeth Jones, Chief Sculptor and Engraver of the U.S. Mint. The obverse features Nike, goddess of Victory, wearing a crown of olive leaves. The reverse features Marcel Jovines's stylized Olympic flame, evoking the spectacle of the Games and the renewal of the Olympic spirit every four years.
