1722 PENNY Rosa Americana Penny, UTILE MS63 Brown PCGS.
Breen-115. 129.9 grains. An attractive, even brown example of this popular Colonial type coin.
This is one of the finest examples known of this variety. Only one other PCGS MS63 coin has been certified, and one NGC piece has been graded with none finer (11/05).
Sharply struck, the only mark of any significance is a rim nick on the reverse above the period between DULCI and 1722. This coin represents the ultimate Rosa Americana penny and would be the key to any coin collectors cabinet!
The Rosa Americana coins depict King George I on the obverse with the Tudor rose on the reverse. The obverse legend was one of several forms of the King's name and title while the reverse legend had various forms of ROSA AMERICANA and UTILE DULCI (the useful with the agreeable). The Latin phrase is from the Ars poetica of Horace, line 343: "Omne tulit punctum qui misquit utile dulci" (He has won universal approval who has combined the useful with the agreeable).
