1817 1C 15 Stars. N-16, R.1. AU55 The 15 Stars obverse, listed in the Guide Book and always popular with collectors of any status, novice or advanced. This example represents the early die state prior to the formation of a rim break on the reverse, between A and M. Attractively mottled tan, olive, and dark brown surfaces. Pleasing surfaces with few scattered abrasions, but none that stand out. The 15 Stars obverse die is one of those mysteries that numismatists have been trying to unravel ever since it was first discovered or identified. This mystery, like the E and L counterstamped quarter mystery, may never be resolved to everyone's satisfaction.
