1760 Voce Populi Halfpenny. Nelson-9, Zelinka 6-C, W-13820. Rarity-3. AU-58 (PCGS).
Choice glossy orange-brown surfaces with most design elements boldly to sharply defined. Lightly struck in the centers, the reverse is a bit rough in that area to betray the original planchet texture. A few tiny carbon spots scattered around the obverse periphery are easily forgotten; more significant are a tiny planchet pit at 7 o'clock on the obverse border and a couple of light scratches in the field before the first letter P in POPULI. Late reverse die state with traces of roughness due to erosion, area of die swell in the left field, the crack at the back of the seated figure's head advanced with a small cud joining the left foot of the letter N in HIBERNIA. An attractive, original and highly appealing example that will appeal to type and variety collectors alike.
Provenance: From the Carolina Colonial Coin Collection. Purchased from Robert Rhue, March 23, 2000.
